托马斯·艾略特是20世纪英国文学史上影响最大的诗人之一,也是西方现代主义作家的重要代表。艾略特一生创作了大量诗歌,这些诗歌集中反映了西方工业化发展所带来的一系列社会问题,表现了诗人对人生命运以及社会的思索,深入探讨了现代文明的困境和战争带给人的幻灭感,显示出浓厚的悲剧色彩。其中,艾略特创作的《荒原》等一系列诗歌,更是集中表现了物质高度发达的时代人类的种种困惑与烦恼,有着非常强烈的悲剧性意义。本文选取艾略特创作的一些重要作品,对其中的悲剧性意义进行简单的分析。
Thomas Eliot is one of the most influential poets in the history of British literature in the 20th century and is also an important representative of Western modernist writers. Eliot created a large number of poems all his life. These poems focused on a series of social problems brought about by the development of industrialization in the West. They reflected the poet’s contemplation on the life and society as well as the plight of modern civilization and the war brought Disillusionment, showing a strong tragedy. Among them, Eliot’s “Waste Land” and a series of poetry, but also focused on the material highly developed era of human confusion and troubles, has a very tragic significance. This article chooses some important works written by Eliot and makes a simple analysis of the tragic significance.
