Introduction Within the next two years, the number of Japanese vehicles with air spring bogies has increased from 540 to about 1,800. About 1,200 of the 1,800 vehicles are electric motor trains, buses and EMUs. Now some express trains and some express trains have adopted air spring bogies. Air springs have recently been used on electric motorcycles trafficked in the suburbs. Of course, when the Tokaido Mainline is completed, an express train operating on this line will also use an air spring. Air springs have two salient features: (1) easy access to soft running qualities and the ability to absorb high-frequency vibrations; and (2) constant body horsepower regardless of load changes. Therefore, it is not only suitable for high-class vehicles, but also for suburban buses with heavy passenger loads.
