No moral obligation can be justified without being preconditioned by the mutual consents of the moral agents involved in the action. This paper puts question about the traditional liberal view by the discussion of the filial obligation of one person to his aged parents. In terms of the distinction between two kinds of obligations, namely the moral responsibility and moral duty, the author claims that one should often do something, not for his consent but for his obligation. Therefore, the filial obligation should belong to the category of moral duty rather than to that of moral responsibility. Basically, in terms of the family as a natural community rather than a community based on the social contract, it is one person’s filial obligation to serve his aged parents.
