Harold Pinter’s theater space is known as a “closed environment.” He chose this type of spatial structure to achieve a “defamiliarization” effect on the stage, while in the sense of existence he explored the subjectivity of the characters. Pinter’s chamber environment reflects the phenomenological significance of the essence of life on the stage structure and thus shows the subjective construction of various roles in space. In a closed space, Pintereck allows the audience to comprehend the essence of life and reexamine the daily life which is neglected by himself. Through the self-confirmation of the existence in space, Pinter expresses his anxiety about the loss of personal subjectivity in the modern context.
