The Shanghai Institute of Geology and Exploration Technology began development of a reaction sintering silicon nitride process and a silicon nitride plunger (replacement of a ceramic plunger on a BW250/50 pump) since 1977. After more than four years of repeated exploration and experimentation, it was successful in early 1981. The mechanical properties of the Shanghai Silicate Study, the Shanghai Materials Research Institute’s determination of the compressive and impact strengths, and the Shanghai Geological Laboratory’s laboratory for density testing have demonstrated that the physical and mechanical properties of the reaction-sintered silicon nitride materials have reached advanced levels in the country.
