In this paper, the problem of backscattering is studied from the theory of migration. First of all, a forward model is deduced, in which the primary wave, the surface multiple wave and various other intra-layer multiples energy. Using this model, three recursive steps of the downward continuation method are proposed, which eliminate multiple waves, invert extrapolation and imaging. It will be shown that the seismic-physical interpretation of this algorithm is easy by studying the problem of backscattering by migration theory. In addition, different types of multiples may or may not be included at any stage of the inversion process. In the past, both the theory of backscattering and the theory of seismic migration have been developed in different aspects (Chaerbout, 1976; Stone and Bojarski, 1980; Bieistein and Cohen, 1980; Clayton and Stolt, 1981). As a result, the theories of the two disciplines are so different that there is no confusion in the exchange between experts in migration and research backscattering experts.
