In this paper, 2- (2,6-dibromo-4-nitrophenylazo) -7- (2’-phosphono-4’-chlorophenylazo) -1,8-dihydroxynaphthalene- Disulfonic acid (abbreviated as DBNCPA) and chlorophosphonazo Ⅰ (abbreviation CPA-Ⅰ) were respectively used as chromogenic agents for rare earth and magnesium, and a new method for determination of rare earth and magnesium in steel was proposed. DBNCPA is a new rare earth color reagent recently reported. It is characterized by being able to develop color in a variety of acid media of mol·L -1 level, wide range of acidity, good selectivity and sensitivity high.
