Background: Statistical potential is widely used in the protein structure prediction as well as protein folding research, and it is showed to be more powerful than physics-based energy functions.Orientation-dependent statistical potential is a kind of statistical potential that takes into consideration the multi-body effects, and thus performs considerably better than the traditional pairwise statistical potentials. However, none of the current orientation-dependent statistical potentials integrate a reference state, which has been shown to improve the performance in the pairwise potentials, such as distance-dependent potential.
