Prostate cancer (PCa), one of the most common malignancies in men, is the second leading cause of cancer-related mortality in the United States.The androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) to suppress PCa was initially demonstrated by Huggins and Hodges in 1941 and remains as the standard treatment for advanced and/or metastatic PCa.ADT reduces the androgens binding to androgen receptor (AR) via either surgical castration or chemical castration via AR antagonists in conjunction with bilateral orchiectomy or gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonists.ADT improves survival in combination with radiation therapy and reduces cancer-related morbidities.The use of ADT to treat PCa has increased by 27% in less than a decade and it is now being used even in men with earlystage PCa.
