Effects on JinHuang powder for the treatment of DFUs a meta-analysis

  Objective: Traditional Chinese herbal medicines have been used for a long time to treat a great deal of diseases,such as many cancers, hypertension, primary dysmenorrhea, etc., and many controlled trials have been done to investigate efficacy of Jinghuang powder for the treatment of DFUs, and no systematic review/meta analysis has considered effects of Jinhuang powder on DFUs.A systematic review performed to objectively evaluate the potential value of Jinhuang powder for the treatment of DFUs (diabetic foot ulcers).Methods: Seven electronic literature databases, including CNKI(China National Knowledge Infrastructure),Chongqing VIP digital database, Chinese Wanfang database, CBM(Chinese Biomedical Database), the Cochrane Library, PubMed, Web of Science(WOS), were electronically searched to collect the randomized controlled trials (RCTs) (from inception to December, 2013), and the relevant references of the eligible articles were also manually searched.According to the inclusion and exclusion criteria, the literatures were screened and data were extracted,as well as methodological quality was assessed.A meta-analysis was performed by using Meta analyst software,version beta 3.13, and Stata 12.0 to pool the estimate.Results: A total of 3 RCTs involving 198 cases were enrolled in the meta analysis.The results of meta analyses showed that: (1) the efficacy in external application with Jinhuang powder group was superior to that of in control group, with statistical significant difference [RR=1.19, 95% CI (1.064, 1.331), P=0.00]; (2) the wound healing time in external application with Jinhuang powder group was superior to that of in control group, and there was statistical significant difference [SMD=-3.404, 95% CI (-5.821,-0.987), P=0.00].Conclusion: The external applications with Jinhuang powder maybe an effective and cost-effectiveness therapeutic approach for DFUs.Limitations from quantity and quafity of the eligible studies, large sample size and multicenter studies were needed to validate the effects.
