A long-term study on the environmental impacts of road salt (sodium chloride) has been conducted since 1992 in Saskatchewan, Canada. This study commenced with recording the ambient environmental pre-impact salinity data by sampling at pre-determined sites before the highway was exposed to the application of road salts. A detailed sampling scheme for soil and water sampling was then implemented accompanying with various amounts of road salt applied every year at this highway section after it was opened to traffic. Ten vadose sampling sites, fourteen surface water sampling sites and three ground water monitoring wells have been identified in the study area by the end of 2002. A database has been developed for sampling data management. This paper introduces the study area, the sampling method and method to manage sampling data. Sampling results from one vadose site V1 are present. Levels of major salinity parameters (sodium and chloride concentration) and ESP are discussed.
