Objective:To compare the amount of new bone produced by statin, naringin,Gusuibu, puerarin,SM,Quercetin and Daidzein in collagen matrix (carrier) to that produced by the collagen matrix alone. Methods:Fifty four bone defects,5mm ? 10 mm were created in the parietal bone of 27 New Zealand White rabbits. In the experimental group,6 defects were grafted with statin solution mixed with collagen matrix; 6 defects were grafted with naringin solution mixed with collagen matrix; 6 defects were grafted with Gusuibu extract mixed with collagen matrix; 6 defects were grafted with puerarin solution mixed with collagen matrix; 6 defects were grafted with SM extract mixed with collagen matrix. In the control groups,6 defects were grafted with collagen matrix alone (active control) and 6 were left empty (passive control).Animals were killed on day 14 and the defects were dissected and prepared for histological assessment.Serial sections were cut across each defect.Quantitative analysis of new bone formation was made on 300 sections (50 sections for each group) using image analysis.
