Chroogomphus rutilus (Schaeff.: Fr.) O.K.Mill.is an economical wild mushroom that can be served as a practical food.To date, the isolation of Chroogomphus rutilus has been difficult.A possible endophytic fungus, a Penicillium sp.strain, was isolated and internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequence was provided in this study.The phylogenetic analysis and morphological characters of this Penicillium sp.strain and three Chroogomphus sp.fruiting bodies, collected from two sites in the Beijing region and one site in Liaoning Province, were examined.The results showed that these three Chroogomphus sp.fruiting bodies were C.rutilus, based on the analysis of the molecular phylogeny and morphological characters.
