In japan,the very real social problem of the corrosion damage associated with aging has reared its ugly head in the case of steel bridges.Old bridges erected in previous eras used riveted joints,and we need to accurately assess and understand the remaining strength of corroded riveted joints to recover their performance and prolong their life.This kind of research is quite rare,and it is clear that numerous basic data needs to be accumulated in the future.Thus,in this study,riveted joint parts are removed from old plate girder bridges and,using processed specimens,performed single and double shear strength tests on tensile loaded rivets in order to investigate the joint strength and failure type of the corroded riveted joints.At the same time,survey and component analyses of internal defects in the base material and splice plates,as well as just the rivets,were carried out.It should be noted that both the Amarube and Ananaigawa bridges were dismantled after 100 years of service.
