The oxidative stress is one of the major factors causing injury to plants exposed to environmental stress. In this study, exogenous melatonin were applied to apple (Malus domestica Borkh.) leaves treated methyl viologen (MV), in order to reveal the role of melatonin in apple responding to photooxidative stress. When detached leaves were pretreated with melatonin, they showed higher tolerance to photooxidative stress compared with water pre-treated leaves. After MV treatment, melatonin effectively alleviated the decrease in chlorophyll content and maximum potential photosystem Ⅱ efficiency (Fv/Fm) compared to control.
