Advances in treatment, along with an ageing population, have resulted in an increase in the number of patients receiving anti cancer therapies each year.Concerns have been raised regarding the standard of care provided to patients who develop acute complications of treatment, or previously undiagnosed malignancy, requiring emergency hospital admission (National Confidentiality Enquiry into Patient Outcome & Death, 2008).In 57% of more than 1000 patients who died within 30 days of chemotherapy, monoclonal antibody therapy or immunotherapy, care was deemed unsatisfactory or with room for improvement.
