Realization of 2 μm laser output in Tm3+-doped lead silicate double cladding fiber

  A novel Tm3+-doped lead silicate glass with good thermal stability was prepared in this work.Various concentrations of Tm2O3 ranging from 0.1wt%, 1wt%,2wt%, 3wt%, 4wt% to 5wt% were doped into the glasses.Through thorough investigation of 2 μm luminescent properties of the glasses, optimal Tm2O3 doping concentration was checked to be 3wt%, as shown in Figure.1.Large batches of glasses were melted and glasses with good quality were obtained.Double cladding fiber was prepared by stacking method using 1 mm glass rods, which were firstly drawn in the drawing tower from preforms.The inset in figure.2 is cross section of the fiber.The inner cladding in hexagonal shape helped to eliminate the spiral light.As a result, 2 μm laser output was realized in a 40 cm fiber.Laser spectrum peaks at 1996 nm at threshold pump power of 14 w.As shown in figure.2, FWHM of laser spectrum is 13 nm, much narrower than that of luminescence spectrum.The maximum output power was limited to 70 mw due to large amount of heat generated in the fiber.
