Butanol is an advance biofuel candidate and an important based chemical.Butanol from acetone-butanol-ethanol (ABE) fermentation has a long history but started to fade until 1980s due to the competition of petrochemical-butanol.The major drawback of the ABE fermentation process needs to be overcome includes low productivity and stronger end-product inhibition.To overcome the problems of ABE fermentation,the improvement of fermentation process and the application of butanol separation technologies are necessary.In recent years,numerous studies of immobilized fermentation could achieve high cell density in the bioreactor,and the ABE productivity was hugely improved.A plenty of lignocellulosic biomasses were used as the immobilized carrier with good properties.Besides,in situ recovery of butanol via different types of recovery techniques could not only remarkably decrease the toxic of butanol,the end-product,to the cells,but also generate high titer ABE products at the same time.Among the butanol recovering techniques,gas stripping was demonstrated no harm to the culture,no fouling and easy to operate,and proved to be the economic and favorable choice.
