Electron transport in inorganic semiconductors and metals occurs through delocalized bands formed by overlapping electron orbitals. The strong correlation of electronic wavefunctions with the ionic cores couples the electron and lattice motions, leading to efficient interaction and scattering that degrades coherent charge transport.
