Organochlorine insecticide dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) and heavy metal cadmium (Cd) are widespread environmental pollutants.They are persistent in the environment and can accumulate in the bodies of animals and humans.Although the individual toxicity of DDT and Cd has been well documented so far, their joint toxicity still lacked investigation.Because liver is their common target of toxicity, the individual and combined toxicity of DDT and Cd on human HepG2 cells was investigated in the current study.The results showed that DDT and Cd inhibited HepG2 cell viability dose-dependently and caused changes in lysosomal morphology and function.Intracellular reactive oxygen species and lipid peroxidation level were induced by DDT and Cd treatment.The combined cytotoxicity of DDT and cadmium was higher than their individual cytotoxicity and the interaction between cadmium and DDT was additive on inhibition of cell viability and lysosomal function.These results may facilitate the evaluation of the cumulative risk of the environmental pollutants.
