To improve the surgical results of aortic dissection, we utilized a novel vascular ring connector (VRC), for anastomosis.The VRC is a titanic ring and is used as a stent in the vascular graft to achieve a quick, blood-sealed, and sutureless anastomosis.From November 2007 to July 2009, 33 consecutive patients with aortic dissection (age 30-77 years, males/females 29/4, 22 type A, 11 type B) underwent open surgery.All patients received aortic reconstruction with vascular grafts (including 5 elephant trunks, 10 arch replacement and 2 total replacement of thoracic aorta).The combined procedures were: 6 Bentalls operations, 6 CABG, and one heart transplantation.There were no blood leaks from the anastomotic sites.The time required for each anastomosis was 2 minutes.All patients except one were discharged uneventfully and are still very well after a follow-up period of 1-20 months.We conclude that the use of VRC may improve the early and mid-term surgical results of aortic dissection by reducing both the time for anastomosis and the risk of bleeding.
