This research project investigates the non-tonal language (English, Japanese and Korean) learners acquisition of Chinese tones.2,024 disyllabic tonal productions made by the three types of learners are examined from a new perspective of universal phonological constraints and the similarities and differences of the tonal error patterns are analyzed.Based on the results of the experiments, this study provides pedagogical implications for the development of tone teaching materials.
