Fractal theory offers a new method of quantifying integrated characteristics of watershed morphology. The conversion of watershed morphologic characteristics of different spatial scales is a key problem for predictive models of soil and water loss at regional or watershed scale. In this study,a conversion relational model of watershed morphology at different spatial scales was presented in Baishuixi,Lanzhouxi,Wuqiaohe and Mixihe watersheds of the Yangtse River. And software was developed to calculate the fractal information dimension by the Avenue language and ArcGIS system. As a case study, fractal information dimension of Watershed No.3 (including Baishuixi,Lanzhouxi and Wuqiaohe watersheds) was calculated according to the conversion relationship model and topographic data from sample watershed of No.1.Results showed that the relative error of the calculation result of the fractal information dimension of watershed No.3 is ranged between 0.000 and 0.012,with an average of 0.003.This study provides conversion model of watershed morphologic characteristics at different spatial scales by fractal information dimension, weight coefficient and GIS.
