Object: To introduce a new reference system and technique workflow for three dimensional design of asymmetry correction based on natural head position. The accuracy and clinical feasibility was tested.Patients and Methods: Between November 2012 to March 2013, 12 patients diagnosed as Angles class Ⅲ, facial asymmetry were included in the study, their average age was 19.3(18-21).The natural head position (NHP) was recorded by gyroscope, and then transferred to virtual skull reconstructed from CT scanning slices using Geomagics 2013.Three dimensional design was performed using Surgicase 5.03.In the virtual environment, the coordination system was corrected to natural coordination after NHP was transferred.Based on natural coordination, the reference planes were set up.3D measurements and bony segmentation reposition were carried out according to vertical and horizontal reference planes, with the aids to asymmetry correction.Digital splints were designed and 3D printed after virtual design was finished.Postoperative CT scan was carried out after 4 weeks after surgery.Facial asymmetry was evaluated. The difference between of virtual design and real surgery was also validated.
