A detailed analysis of local recurrences demonstrates that continuous growth models provide descriptions significantly contrasting with clinical data and those discrepancies between expected and observed results may be resolved by assuming phases of "tumour dormancy".The tumour dormancy hypothesis is further supported by the analysis of the recurrence dynamics irrespective of the site (local, regional, distant): for patients not given adjuvant chemotherapy,the risk of recurrence includes an early fairly broad surge, peaking at about 18 months after surgery, a second peak at about 60 months and then a tapered plateau-like tail extending up to 15 years.
