The involvements ofphonology and orthography in reading of Chinese for children and adults were examined using the error disruption paradigm with their eye movements recorded.Participants were instructed to read sentences which contained substituted characters. The first characters of the target words in sentences were replaced by orthographically similar, homophonic or unrelated ones.Reductions in fixation durations on orthographically similar and homophonic words relative to unrelated words were used to reveal the reliance of orthographic and phonological information during reading for comprehension. When the target words were replaced by homophonic characters, there was a reliable reduction in gaze duration on the pre-target words for children but not for adults. When thetarget words were replaced by orthographically similar characters, there was a reliable reduction in first-fixation duration on the target words for adults but not for children. These findings suggested that children first rely on the phonological processing and then change to the use of an orthographic processing in the adulthood.
