A series of waterborne polyurethane dispersions (PUDs) and waterborne polyurethane-acrylate hybrid dispersions (PUADs) based on 1, 6-hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI) trimer and toluene diisocyanate (TDI) were prepared and characterized. The influence of-NCO and-OH mole ratio, HDI trimer and TDI mole ratio, dimethylol propionic acid (DMPA) content, methyl methacrylate (MMA) and polyurethane (PU) mass ratio on particle sizes, viscosities, and stabilities were investigated. The morphology of PUD and PUAD was studied with Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM).The results show that with the increasing of-NCO and-OH mole ratio, the particle sizes of PUD increased, while their viscosity and stability decrease. The PUADs had better resistance property of ethyl acetate when the HDI trimer and TDI mole ratio was increased. With the increasing of DMPA content, the particle sizes of PUADs decreased, while their stability was improved and their viscosities were increased. This experiment indicated the HDI trimer could improve the properties of PUD.
