Exogenous salicylic acid (SA) can significantly improve abiotic tolerance in higher plants.In this study,the effects ofpretreatment with 0.5 mM salicylic acid (SA)on protecting the growth from subsequent drought stress (PEG-6000,20%) in maize seedlings were investigated.The results showed that under drought stress,(1) SA pretreatment increased the activities of antioxidative enzymes,including superoxide dismutase and peroxidase,by 45.9%,16.9%%,respectively.And then,the accumulation of O2-and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) were reduced significantly,then lipid peroxidation was relatively relieved;(2) SA significantly increased the content of proline by 16.7%,decreased the accumulation of malondialdehyde (MDA) by 26.2%,and improve the seedling drought resistance;(3) Interestingly,SA protected the photosystem Ⅱ (PSⅡ) photochemistry reaction,performing as increased the potential photochemical efficiency (Fv/Fm) of PSⅡ and electron transport rate;(4)Meanwhile,SA inhibited the decrease of D1 protein in PSⅡ reactive center that is caused by stress,and the change of the psbA gene transcription was in the same way.
