Preeclampsia is a complex multisystem disorder of pregnancy where oxidative stress plays an important etiological role.The importance of selenium in the synthesis of endogenous antioxidants is well documented, and a significant reduction in selenium has been reported in preeclamptic women.The current study addresses the role of endogenous anti-oxidant systems in preeclampsia with the use of cellular and animal models, human tissue and epidemiological analysis.In particular, data on the selenodependent enzymes glutathione peroxidase will be presented and the role of selenium in preeclarnpsia will be considered.
