Diabetes is now a major public health concern worldwide, which affects more than 8% of the population.The prevalence in China is increasing rapidly which adds a huge economic burden to the society.Chinese are susceptible to diabetes because of genetic predispositions, aggravated by overweight and obesity.Despite the fact that there are several classes of anti-diabetic drugs available, maintaining sufficient long-term glycaemic control remains a common challenge, and side effects have also become an increasingly concerns to the patients.With the improvement in understanding of the disease mechanism, many novel targets have been identified and worked on by academia and pharmaceuticals, which brings new hopes to the patients and caregivers.
