Vegetation density is an important element that reflects the ecological change in arid area and remote sensing technology is an effective way to abstract the change of vegetation density. In this paper,we took Qiemo oasis as research area. The study was based on the TM images of 2001,2006 and 2011 in August. We built the complex vegetation index of VBSI based on FCD model. This index contains vegetation index (NDVI),bare soil index (BI),and shadow index (SI).Further, according to the dimidiate pixel principal,we calculated the vegetation density in Qiemo oasis of year 2001,2006 and 2011 respectively and then produced the vegetation coverage graduation map. With the vegetation coverage graduation map,we analyzed and appraised the changes in its structure by the area statistical diagrams and transfer matrices and drew some conclusions.First, low coverage vegetation had the largest area, the next were medium and high coverage,medium-high coverage had the smallest area. The coverage degrees decreased with increasing of the distance from Cherchen River.High coverage vegetation was distributed mainly over the towns and countries in the south oasis and its northern area, which mostly was cultivated land.Medium and medium-high coverage were distributed outside the high level. The distribution of low coverage vegetation was in the outer oasis, where was the transitional belt between the desert and oasis and had a high ecological sensitivity.
