  Yield always is the top priority for the production of fuel ethanol,because the cost as high as 60-70% of the total is from the consumption of the raw materials.Developing strains with less by-products formation has been continuously pursuing.The knock-off of the metabolic pathway of the main by-product glycerol has been heavily studied.The completion of the genome sequencing for the two species Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Zymomonas mobilis and the gradual elucidation of the functions of their genes will benefit developing new strains with better ethanol fermentation performance.Effective contamination control through improving fermentation process design and the hygienic administration of production environment can effectively prevent the loss of raw materials.
