Study on solidification microstructure of high purity Al-Fe binary alloy

The microstructure of Al-F.e binary ahoy processed by metal mould casting was investigated.The effects produced by Fe contents and the pouring temperature on the solidification structures of Al-Fe binary alloy were studied.The results show that Al-Al3Fe eutectic and Al-Al6Fe eutectic exist together in the process of solidification.With the Fe content increase from 2% to 5%, the solidification structures change from the hypoeutectic morphology to the hypereutectic morphology inside the cast bars.Under proper solidification condition, a full eutectic microstructure can be generated in Al-Fe alloys with 3% Fe concentration.The microstructure in this case is characterized by the metastable regular eutectic Al-Al6Fe fibers of nano-scale in diameter, instead of the equilibrium eutectic Al-Al3Fe phase.The content of Fe at the certain range and the pouring temperature can affect the morphology and distribution of the eutectic phases.
