Treatment of cancer using chemotherapy has a long history dating back to the use of nitrogen mustards in the 1940s.There are certain cancers that benefit from chemotherapy,for example testicular cancer,choriocarcinoma,and many blood cancers,but there is a much larger group of solid tumors where chemotherapy has a marginal impact with only modest survival advantages being seen in most patients.The mechanism in cancer cells causing therapeutic resistance has been extensively studied but attempts to overcome this problem have been only marginally successful.
