In support of antibacterial drug discovery and development,the National Institute of allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) has been funding programs coveting basic research,target identification,assay development,high throughput screens,lead optimization,pre-clinical studies,clinical studies,and clinical trials.NIAID also provides services to facilitate translational research with resource and technology with the goal of lowering barriers to entering the product development pipeline.The overall goals of these discovery and development efforts are to control,prevent,and treat diseases caused by infectious pathogens including antimicrobial resistance organism through the combined efforts of academia,industry,and government.This is particularly important in these times of rapid emergence of antimicrobial resistance with diminishing treatment options for selected pathogens.
