理解和运用基本数学思想(比如,基本原则,基本性质,基本关系,基本结构)是小学数学学习的重要目标之一.这些基本思想是理解更高级的数学知识(比如代数)的基础.数学课本为学生的学习提供了机会,是学生学习环境的重要部分.但是,当今的数学教育界缺乏对教材应当如何呈现基本数学思想从而更好支持学生的研究.因此,以等于号,分配律,乘法结合率,逆运算的关系为例进行了系列中美教材比较研究,研究结果揭示了与当今认知心理研究的相符合的教材呈现基本思想的潜在有效方法：(1)教材充分利用情境帮助学生进行有意义的初始学习,(2)通过提出深度问题帮助学生明确体会蕴含的基本思想,(3)并利用结构上的纵向联系帮助学生进行跨时间的学习.
