  Respiratory behavior expresses diverse forms of plasticity by alterations in breathing patterns.Failure of respiratory plasticity often leads to diseases,such as sudden infant death syndrome or obstructive sleep apnea.Long-term facilitation (LTF) is the most frequently studied model for respiratory plasticity.Acute intermittent hypoxia (AIH),three to five short-term hypoxia episodes,induces phrenic LTF (pLTF),whereas chronic intermittent hypoxia (CIH),lasting for days or weeks stimulus episodes,evokes additional neuroplasticity and augmented pLTF.The previous studies,however,were mostly concentrated on phrenic neuroplasticity in high-cervical spinal cord.The pre-B(o)tzinger complex (pre-B(o)tC),a critical kernel of respiratory rhythmogenesis in the ventrolateral medulla oblongata,has been obscure until recently.
