Adsorption of Pb(Ⅱ) from Aqueous Solution on Alkaline Ca-bentonite

  The adsorption of Pb(Ⅱ) from aqueous solution onto alkaline Ca-bentonite (ACB) [1] was investigated based on SEM,XRD and equilibrium data.The results of SEM indicated that the adsorption of Pb(Ⅱ) lead to the obvious changes on the surface of ACB.The XRD results show that the adsorption of Pb(Ⅱ) had caused a significantly change in the structure of ACB along with the formation of Pb precipitates such as hydroxides and carbonate salts.The adsorption of Pb(Ⅱ) on ACB was quick,the percent removal reaching 92% within 5 min and attaining essentially 100% in 45 min.The adsorption data from ACB experiments could be well-described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model [2].The extent of Pb(Ⅱ) removal on ACB increased with increasing pH and the optimum initial pH for Pb(Ⅱ) removal was 3-7.The equilibrium data for Pb(Ⅱ) adsorption on ACB fit the Langmuir isotherm [3] rather well and the Langmuir monolayer adsorption capacity of ACB was 625 mg.g-1.This study has shown that ACB is very suitable for potential applications in Pb(Ⅱ) removal from aqueous solution.
