A carbon-rich solid product of hydrochar microspheres(C)has been prepared by the hydrothermal carbonization of xylose at 180℃ for 12 h,which possesses a core-shell structure consisting of a highly aromatic nucleus and a hydrophilic shell containing a high concentration of reactive oxygen functional groups,for example,hydroxyl,phenolic,carbonyl and carboxylic.[1] These properties make it has great ability to stabilize metal particles and also it is an ideal candidate for chemical modification by 3-mercaptopropyl trimethoxysilane. Thiol groups on hydrochar microspheres enable the modulation of Pd coordination, giving rise to strongly-ligated Pd-C-SH nanocomposites, obtained by the interaction of thiol arms with palladium nanoparticles.
