In recent studies, the level of adenosine deaminase (ADA) in effusion liquids was used for the diagnosis of tuberculous peritonitis (TBP).But it is often impossible to obtain the samples.Serum adenosine deaminase activity (ADA) has been shown to have good diagnostic value for Tuberculosis (TB).However, the serum ADA for diagnosing TBP has not been shown. The serum ADA cutoff point for the diagnosis of TBP is unclear. We attempted to determine the serum ADA level cutoff point for diagnosing of TBP.We reviewed the medical records for serum ADA level in TBP patients who were ascites smear-positive or ascites culture-positive.Non-TB outpatients were selected as control. The average level of serum ADA in TBP and non-TB patients were 28.25 (±8.25) and 10.06 (±6.05) U/L,respectively (P value < 0.05).The best cut-off point was 17.5 U/L.
