Pacing the right ventricle (RV) is an essential treatment for many patients with cardiovascular disease, in particular patients with high-grade heart block. However, this therapy can have unintended consequences including creation of left ventricular (LV) systolic dysfunction and heart failure (HF).We have demonstrated that acute RV pacing in human subjects with normal LV systolic function produces acute mechanical dyssynchrony and decreases in systolic function.
