@@ IntroductionThe importance of publication in internationally refereed.j ournals is increasinglyrecognized in Chinese Higher Education. It iS believed to promote the exchange ofideas between Chinese researchers and internationaI peers. For universities.thenumber ofpapers staffhas published in SCI or SSCI journals is widely accepted as anindicator of the universities’research strength and directly relates tO their ranking inleague tables(e.g,SJTU rankings,Liu&Cheng,2005).For young scholars, thenumber of papers they publish in international journals often determines their salary, funding and career development(Shi,2002).English is by far the dominant languagefor academic publication(Flowerdew,1 999a,b).This,as observed by Shi(2002),putsChinese scholars in a disadvantageous position, having to write in a second languageand even worse, being‘intellectually dislocated’.(This dislocation occurs not SOmuch in terms of physical distance which iS less important in this age of ICT butperhaps also—for some disciplines at 1east—in terms of academic culture). As aconsequence, the chance to gain even‘peripheral participation’in the mainstreamacademic discourse community iS lOW fibid, see also Flowerdew,2000).
