Deep beams are loaded as beams but have a small shear span/depth ratio. They can be used in many structures, such as bridges, tall buildings, foundations, and offshore structures. The conventional beam theory does not apply to deep beams due to geometric or static stress discontinuities. It is difficult to predict the shear strengths of RC deep beams due to the complicated stress conditions and characteristic discreteness of concrete material. For more accurate prediction of the shear strengths, numerous experimental tests and analytical studies have been conducted. As a result, most design code provisions use semi-empirical models developed based on regression analyses of experimental data and simplified calculation formulas based on Strut-and-Tie Model (STM).The number of experimental observations used for developing such models is very limited.
