To start with my second point, an interpreter is a medium of communication. You dont have to be better than the speaker, and you certainly cannot be worse than the speaker. We all know that interpreters have to be loyal, to the core professional mission objectives. And in Chinese, we all know it means being faithful, expressive and elegant, and exactly in that order. Interpreters at the UN should and must be mindful of their core mission and roles, because as an interpreter, if you have to summarize or visualize your mission, it should be that of a bridge. It can be a very simple footbridge, it can be a steel structure, or it can be a landmark building.
