The increased rate of myocardial apoptosis in the aging heart exacerbates myocardial ischemia/reperfusion (MI/R) injury. Our research found the increased expression of Omi/HtrA2, a potent mitochondrial proapoptotic protein, enhanced MI/R injury in aging rat hearts. However, the mechanisms responsible for this agerelated pathologic change remain unclear. The aim of our study was to identify whether mitochondrial Omi was involved in age-related apoptosis through not only its leakage from mitochondria to cytosol but also through the degredation of some anti-apoptotic proteins in mitochondria.
