SLN biopsy has been widely adopted as a safe and accurate means of staging the axilla in patients with breast cancer.Recently it has been shown that SLN can be identified pre operatively using a sub areola injection of SonoVue(R)microbubbles which provides contrast enhanced ultrasound.Initially, all patients with confirmed invasive breast cancer undergo routine axillary ultrasound +/-FNA and only those with negative nodes proceed to microbubble enhanced axillary ultrasound.Between January 2005 and April 2008, 653 patients with invasive breast cancer had pre operative ultrasound of the axilla.232 (38%) of patients had an ultrasound guided FNA or core biopsy and 150 (23%) of patients were confirmed to have axillary node involvement and went on to axillary node clearance.
