The physiology and biochemistry of members of the genus Dunaliella have been extensively studied because of their great commercial value. However, the classification of this genus is still controversial due to a high variation in morphological and physiological attributes under different culture conditions. In this work, seven strains of Dunaliella were isolated from salt lakes in North and Norwest China, and characterized by comparing morphological and molecular analyses.Their nrDNA ITS sequences were determined, and compared with the sequences of other 13 strains of Dunaliella. The phylogenetic trees were constructed based on the ITS sequences using Chlamydomonas reinhardtii as outgroup. The results reveal that the seven Dunaliella strains isolated from China belong to three clades.
