Effects of Light Sources on Chinese Cabbage and Kale Growth

  The effects of different temperature conditions on Chinese cabbage and kale growth have not been reported recently.Our objective was to evaluate the effects of temperature (14 ± 1℃, 17 ± 1℃, 20 ± 1℃, 23 ± 1℃ and 26 ± 1℃) on Chinese cabbage and kale growth including leaf length, leaf width, and leaf weight.Plants were cultivated in a plant factory and the leaf samples were collected at two different sampling times (2& 4 weeks after transplanting of seedlings) to measure their growth parameters.The results showed that leaf length of kale was highest under 26 ± 1℃ at 2 weeks and 4 weeks while leaf width of kale was highest under 26 ± 1℃ for 2 weeks and under 23 ± 1℃ for 4 weeks.The leaf weight of kale was greatest under 20 ± 1℃ at 2 weeks and 4 weeks.The results also showed that leaf length, leaf width and leaf weight of Chinese cabbage were simultaneous highest under 23 ± 1℃ and 20 ± 1℃ at 2 weeks and 4 weeks, respectively.However, the growth of leaf length of kale from 2 weeks to 4 weeks was better under 26 ± 1℃ whereas 23 ± 1℃ was better temperature for the growth of leaf width and leaf weight of kale.The growth of leaf length of Chinese cabbage from 2 weeks to 4 weeks was better under 20 ± 1℃ and growth of leaf width and leaf weight of Chinese cabbage were greatest under 17 ± 1℃.Therefore,we concluded that 23 ± 1° and 20 ± 1℃ resulted in the positive effect on Chinese cabbage growth at 2 weeks and 4 weeks after transplanting of the seedlings, respectively.We also concluded that 26 ± 1℃ resulted in the positive effect on kale growth at 2 weeks.Changing different temperature from 2 weeks to 4 weeks might be helpful to improve the leaf's growth parameters.
