Purpose: Nerve growth factor (NGF) has been previously shown to support neuron survival and direct neurite outgrowth in vitro, and to enhance axonal regeneration in vivo.But NGFconcentration would decline rapidly because of its degradation in aqueous media.This study aimed to develop a chitosan nerve conduit loaded with microspheres that provide sustained release of bioactive NGF and to evaluate whether incorporation of this sustained NGF release system into nerve conduits would improve the regeneration of facial nerves.
