For the production of organic nanocomposites the spray freeze drying technique seems to be the process of choice for temperature and structure sensitive drugs of biological origin such as Interferons. At the same time most of the new very potent drugs of low molecular weight have a poor water solubility. Thus an appropriate solid solution or solid dispersion of such a drug in a hydrophilic matrix, i.e.a nanocomposite will improve substantially the solubility in water.Compared to classical freeze drying the novel process of atmospheric spray freeze drying has many advantages such as a better control of the freezing step and relatively short drying times. The lyophilization process can be easily controlled by dew point temperature measurements. We have sprayed nanocomposite formulated hydrophilic solutions using an ultrasonic nozzle in a separate spray freeze chamber at a temperature of-50 ℃.The frozen droplets are subsequently transferred into a prechilled fluidised bed system for the atmospheric freeze drying at a suitable temperature such as -20 ℃.The resulting product, i.e.nanocomposite pellets with a diameter of ca.150 m combine the advantages of micro and nanotechnology. The pellets keep the shape of the original droplet and have a very porous structure, a good flowability and the expected high solubility, i.e.have typical properties of a lyophilised product as an ideal drug delivery system for poor water soluble and/or thermosensitive drugs. It will be shown that it is possible to model this drying process without any problems.
